Other systems require multiple components to comply with the ADS-B mandate and even more to display the traffic and weather the ADS-B ground system already supplies. The Lynx NGT-9000 model is a single-box ADS-B solution that features a Mode S ES Transponder, a WAAS/GPS (position source), a Wi-Fi transmitter and a touch screen display for the viewing of transponder functions as well as traffic and weather. What takes other systems 3-4 separate components is accomplished with a single Lynx NGT-9000.
The NGT-9000 was designed to replace most legacy transponders from Bendix-King, Garmin and Narco. The face dimensions of the unit are 6.25”w x 1.80”h. The Lynx display is slightly larger than the screen area of an Apple iPhone 5s and features the same crisp display. The Lynx NGT-9000 is a solid-state transponder that completely replaces your legacy transponder.
The Lynx is a resistive touchscreen that has been optimized for cockpit environments. By design, it requires a bit more pressure when executing button pushes and swipe gestures versus traditional consumer devices such as smart phones. This minimizes the unintentional entering of data or accidently executing certain functions in turbulent conditions. The resistive technology also enables the Lynx to function using a gloved hand or when light condensation may be an issue.
The entire line of Lynx models are warranted for a period of three (3) years from the date of installation. Since transponders are a required piece of avionics for most aircraft to fly, L3Harris strives to quickly return to service or exchange your Lynx NGT-9000 model in the event of a failure to avoid any lengthy grounded conditions.
This varies from aircraft to aircraft, but L3Harris has been working with several dealers in establishing a baseline of installation hours. Since the Lynx is completely autonomous and requires no interconnectivity to other instruments, the time and complexity to install is greatly reduced when compared to multi-box solutions. To install the Lynx NGT-9000 as a transponder replacement, the installation typically involves pulling out the old transponder and installing the new Lynx transponder rack and wiring harness in its place. A Lynx dedicated WAAS/GPS antenna also needs to be installed, typically on the top of the aircraft. Most shops can install this basic arrangement in 12- 15 hours. Adding options such as active traffic, antenna diversity or wiring to other compatible cockpit displays will obviously add time and cost to the installation.
Yes, the SkyWatch technology has been further refined and is now contained inside the NGT-9000+ Active Traffic model. This replaces your SkyWatch LRU and reuses its antenna. You will be able to remove your SkyWatch transmitter/receiver (and 10 lbs) from your aircraft. While ADS-B traffic is comprehensive, there are limitations to the service including line-of-sight to station, non-equipped areas, GPS signal integrity and non-participating aircraft. The Lynx NGT-9000+ blends ADS-B with active traffic data, providing an uninterrupted display of aircraft equipped with Mode A, C and S transponders. The NGT-9000+ model also features extended aural alerting of intruder aircraft position such as “Traffic, 11 O’clock High, 2 Miles.”
There are currently no navigation features on the Lynx NGT-9000 other than geopolitical boundaries, airports and waterways. While the ownship position is overlaid on the weather pages, the geographical features are meant for position orientation, not for navigation such as plotting a course or showing victor airways.
The traffic data starts at 2 nm and can be scaled out several levels to 40 nm. Weather screens are scalable from 10 to 800 nm. A settings button on the weather page allows pilots to customize the weather data in both detail and range. You will be able to view weather across the entire ADS-B coverage of the United States. Panning the maps is accomplished by holding a finger on the weather map for a few seconds until the pan function is enabled.
In the United States, the ADS-B requirements can be satisfied by two different frequencies for various reasons determined by the FAA. The short answer is that the 978 MHz frequency can receive both the ADS-B In (traffic and weather) while also accomplishing the ADS-B Out requirement for most GA aircraft. The exception is aircraft flying above 18,000’ and/or outside the United States. These aircraft would need to be equipped with a 1090 MHz In/Out to guarantee compliance and continued access to free traffic and weather. The Lynx NGT-9000 models are dual-band 978 and 1090 MHz system that operate on both frequencies, removing the restrictions of flying outside or above the above mentioned thresholds.
When you consider the list of equipment required for ADS-B equipage (transponder, WAAS/GPS source, display, encoder/decoder, Wi-Fi), it’s unlikely that prices will come down from their current levels. In fact, as the mandate to equip date draws closer, you may see prices rise as demand outpaces supply.
In the coming years, only aircraft who have equipped with a certified ADS-B Out solution will be able to receive the ADS-B In data. For example, the Lynx NGT-1000 is an ADS-B “Out” only device that costs around $2,000. You would still be able to use your dash mounted unit and iPad for the “In” signal. However, for about $1,000 more, you can upgrade to the Lynx NGT-2000 and have an ADS-B In/Out device that creates a Wi-Fi environment without any extra installation costs. You can rid yourself of the dashboard unit and its wiring clutter while still enjoying the iPad for your display of traffic and weather. And if you lack a compliant transponder, the Lynx NGT-9000 unit starts to make even more economical sense.
No. The majority of the data on the NGT-9000 display is ADS-B In data which is transmitted continuously for free. The only updates to the database would be airports and geopolitical features that have been modified (added or deleted) since the installation of the unit.
