GRAND RAPIDS, MI, February 1, 2016 – L-3 Aviation Products (L-3 AP) today announced that its Lynx® NGT-9000 now offers embedded Terrain Alerting & Warning (eTAWS) and ADS-B Traffic Advisory (ATAS) aural alerting. The Lynx NGT-9000 is an ADS-B touchscreen transponder that is also capable of displaying traffic and weather data.
“This is the first in a series of planned capabilities to be added to the Lynx line of ADS-B products,” said Larry Riddle, L-3 Aviation Products’ vice president of marketing and sales. “eTAWS adds an additional screen to the NGT-9000 display, highlighting terrain surrounding the aircraft. The ATAS capability adds a visual and aural alerting for ADS-B traffic for pilot’s to quickly identify where potential traffic threats exist.” The eTAWS and ATAS software enhancements will be available to both new production and existing Lynx units in the field.
The Lynx eTAWS option adds terrain alerting through both graphic and aural warnings. The color-coded terrain screen provides a surveillance range of 24-nmi and will alert the pilot when a Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) is imminent. The Lynx unit will automatically switch to the eTAWS screen when a terrain warning is issued and will also alert the pilot through the audio panel of the terrain situation. The Lynx eTAWS page also shows land based obstacles. Alerts for Negative Climb Rates and other Ground Proximity Warnings (GPWS) are also included with the eTAWS enablement.
The Lynx ATAS option announces the range, bearing and relative altitude of intruder aircraft through cockpit’s audio system. Pilots will hear warnings such as “Traffic, Traffic, 3 O’ Clock High, 2 Miles.” This aids the pilot in referencing where aircraft are approaching, allowing a “head’s up” approach to identifying traffic threats. “Aural traffic alerting is a standard part of the NGT-9000+ Active Traffic Model,” adds Riddle. “The ATAS option adds this audio capability to ADS-B Traffic on any NGT-9000 model.”
